SW CASC Natural Resources Workforce Development Fellowship Now Accepting Applications for the 2025–26 Cohort!

The Southwest Climate Adaptation Science Center (SW CASC) is proud to announce that applications are now open for the 2025–26 Natural Resources Workforce Development (NRWD) Fellowship. Designed to empower graduate students in developing use-inspired, actionable science, this fellowship offers an unparalleled opportunity for hands-on training in natural resource management.
This year’s fellowship theme is Functional Flows for Wildlife and Water Quality. As streamflow regimes throughout the southwestern US have been altered by withdrawals, diversions, storage, and environmental change, these shifts have significantly impacted biological communities and water quality. A functional flows approach to water management emphasizes the seasonal elements of the natural flow regime that sustain critical ecosystem processes. NRWD Fellows will collaborate with researchers at Utah State University and two state agencies to link functional flows in the Great Salt Lake Basin with measurable ecological indicators, ultimately informing best management practices that support water quality and aquatic life.
Applicants must be currently enrolled in an M.S. or Ph.D. degree program at one of the seven SW CASC consortium institutions (University of Arizona, Northern Arizona University, Utah State University, University of Nevada Las Vegas, University of California Davis, University of California Los Angeles, and University of San Diego/Scripps Institute of Oceanography) and be in good standing as they progress toward degree completion.
Selected fellows will collaborate as a team and commit to participating in two in-person multi-day meetings (September 23–27, 2025, and September 24–28, 2026) along with biweekly cohort teleconferences.
The fellowship includes a stipend of $9,000, with travel arrangements to each meeting organized by the program at Utah State University in Logan, Utah.
