In a recent review, funded in part by the SW CASC, researchers synthesized the state of knowledge regarding the mechanisms underlying drought-related tree mortality. The authors considered research on woody-plant mortality in an increasingly hot and dry climate with increasing carbon dioxide and vapor pressure deficit (VPD) to explore the mechanisms underlying such mortality. Advancing knowledge in this field requires the use of a range of different experimental and modeling approaches, as well as the integration of carbon, water, and other processes underlying mortality
