This week, the Southwest Climate Adaptation Science Center (SW CASC) will present an exciting session at the SACNAS 2024 NDiSTEM Conference in Phoenix. This conference brings together a diverse group of scientists, educators, and students to promote diversity and innovation in STEM.

The SW CASC session, titled "USGS Actionable Science and Tribal Engagement in the Southwest," will take place on Thursday, October 31, 2024, from 3:30 PM to 4:45 PM in Room 131 ABC. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about SW CASC initiatives in tribal engagement, climate adaptation science, and student involvement from members of the center:

  • Stephanie McAfee, SW CASC Regional Administrator, will introduce the SW CASC and its role in climate science.
  • Anissa McKenna, Tribal Climate Resilience Liaison, will discuss tribal engagement efforts.
  • Jessica Driscoll, USGS Science Program Officer & Tribal Liaison for the Rocky Mountain Region, will highlight the SW CASC’s collaborations with the USGS.
  • Gods’gift Chukwuonye, SW CASC NRWD Fellow, will share insights on being a student fellow.
  • Jia Hu, University Director of the SW CASC, will explain how the CASC and the University of Arizona work together to foster the next generation of climate scientists.

This session will offer a deep dive into the challenges and strategies for climate adaptation in the Southwest, covering topics such as wildfire impacts, sea-level rise, and collaboration with tribal communities. Attendees will also learn about the ASIST initiative in the Colorado River Basin, which focuses on identifying and addressing tribal science needs.
