We are thrilled to congratulate the Southwest Climate Adaptation Science Center’s NRWD Fellows on their poster presentation at the American Geophysical Union (AGU) 2024 conference! Their work sheds light on how ranchers and rangeland managers in the Southwest are experiencing and understanding changes in climate; from shorter-term droughts to the long-term shift toward a drier climate in the southwest known as aridification. Our fellows presented that, while scientific literature doesn’t always agree on the exact terms for these challenges, managers on the ground are responding with effective adaptation strategies.

As part of the project, the fellows created a user-friendly tool in Google Earth Engine that allows anyone to produce custom maps to monitor changes in PET (Potential Evapotranspiration) since the 20th century (1901–2023). This hands-on resource makes it easier for researchers, managers, and the public to visualize and understand how the southwest climate may be shifting over time.

Please join us in congratulating our fellows on this important milestone in their time with the SW CASC, and wishing them the best in their future endeavors!
